A response to Wojnarowicz Controversy

Wednesday, January 26th, 6:00 – 8:00 pm

University of Oregon in Portland

70 NW Couch Street, 97209

The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery show, “Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire an American Portrait,” was scheduled to run October 30, 2010 – February 13, 2011.  On December 1st, the Smithsonian removed the film “A Fire in my Belly” by the late artist David Wojnarowicz from the exhibition.  The Smithsonian’s removal of “A Fire in my Belly” has been the first act of censorship of publically funded art since the culture wars in the early 90s. On January 26th the University of Oregon Portland will join several institutions around the country by screening “A Fire in my Belly.” The film will be followed by a panel discussion on the ramifications of cultural censorship in America and its ramifications for journalism, news reporting, equity and diversity in museums, constitutional rights, and a discussion of cultural censorship.

This event is free and open to the public.

Panelists include:

John Frohnmayer, former NEA Chair. Mr. Frohmayer served during the first Bush administration and resigned in 1992 after Culture Wars controversies.

Phaedra Livingstone, University of Oregon Arts and Administration, Museum Studies. Professor Livingstone’s current research focuses on equity and diversity perspectives in museum planning, policy and practice.

Al Stavitsky, Director, School of Journalism and Communications George S. Turnbull Center, Portland. Mr. Stavitsky is a scholar of public radio journalism and public broadcasting and has broad experience with censorship in the media.

Ying Tan, University of Oregon Art Department, Digital Arts. Professor Tan’s recent work explores the relationship between vision and sound in non-objective film. Tan will share her perspective on creative culture as it has been informed by her experience in the Chinese Cultural Revolution.
